January 10 - Lobbying Day and WV Greenworks event

posted Jan 5, 2012, 9:46 AM by Molly McLaughlin

We'll be having our first lobbying day on January 10, 2012 and would love to see you there. We'll be meeting at 11AM in the rotunda (the main dome, near the information desk) of the Capitol Building in Charleston, WV. We're encouraging everyone to set up a meeting with their representatives for that day and we'll have fact sheets about the Energy Efficiency Resource Standard and the Least Cost Planning bills for you to give to your representatives.
Additionally, from 1-4PM West Virginia Greenworks is hosting an event.  This event will include presentations and panel discussions on major pieces of energy efficiency legislation that will come up this year: improving building codes for energy efficiency, an energy expansion fund, the energy efficiency resource standard, and least-cost planning.  We hope you can stick around for what promises to be an exciting discussion!
Contact if you're interested in coming to one or both of these events!

On Thursday Dec. 22 we filed our final brief in the Mon Power/Potomac Edison case # 11-0452, which began last March when FirstEnergy filed their badly flawed plan for energy efficiency. Here is a link to the press release that describes the case and a link to our legal brief.

Over these past weeks we have had several opportunities to discuss the issues with the PSC staff and Consumer Advocate, and we have participated in several "settlement talks" with the company and other parties, which basically went nowhere. FirstEnergy is clearly the most resistant company we have encountered to the idea of saving customers energy and money. Along the way, we have cemented some very good relations with experts from inside and outside West Virginia. We are grateful to faculty and students at WVU Law School, who have helped with research and review of legal arguments.

Thanks also to Cathy Kunkel, Dan Sawmiller (Ohio utility analyst), John Manchester (Lewisburg Mayor), and Allen Cook, Upshur County Seniors, who all testified in this case. Also thanks to the many folks who filed comments with the PSC in support of a stronger plan. Finally, thanks to Mary Anne Maul and Gary Zuckett at WV-CAG who handled our financial and legal obligations.
